中学英語で夏目漱石の『草枕』翻訳3
俳句のことが書いてある。英語に置き換えるために何度も読んでいる。それにしても良いことを言っている。英語の勉強よりも原文を熟読するほうが勉強になる。

夏目漱石の俳句の師は正岡子規、夏目漱石は寺田寅彦の師、ぜいたくな系譜ですね。

こんな時にどうすれば詩的な立脚地に帰れるかと云えば、おのれの感じ、その物を、おのが前に据えつけて、その感じから一歩退いて有体に落ち付いて、他人らしくこれを検査する余地さえつくればいいのである。
詩人とは自分の屍骸を、自分で解剖して、その病状を天下に発表する義務を有している。その方便は色々あるが一番手近なのは何でも蚊でも手当たり次第十七字にまとめて見るのが一番いい。十七字は詩形として尤も軽便であるから、顔を洗う時にも、厠に上った時にも、電車に乗った時にも、容易にできる。十七字が容易に出来ると云う意味は安直に詩人になれると云う意味であって、詩人になれると云うのは一種の悟りであるから軽便だと云って侮蔑する必要はない。軽便であればある程功徳になるから返って尊重すべきものと思う。

The best way is to put everything around us together and express them in 17-letters. 17-letters is the easiest style of poem, so we can make it easily even while washing a face, sitting on a toilet, or taking public vehicles. 17-letters of the effortless method means that you can become a poet easily. As for becoming a poet is one kind of spiritual awakenings, so you don’t need to despise it. On the contrary, I think it must be respected, because the simpler things become, the more it holds virtuous deeds.
