中学英語で夏目漱石の『草枕』翻訳8

今日は国際展示場のTully’s coffeeです。あまり間を置くといやになるので翻訳勉強始めようか。

英語に置き換えるとき、”現在形にするか過去形にするか”、”これは単数なのか複数か”、”原文の意図は定冠詞なのか”、などいつも迷っている。プロではないので、深追いせずにサッラといきましょう。

夏目漱石は『自然を写す文章』で「…私の考では自然を写すー即ち叙事といふものは、なにもそんなに精細に微細に写す必要はあるまいとおもふ。写せたところでそれは必ずしも価値のあるものではあるまい。…..」と述べているが、草枕は例外のようだ。１文を英訳するのに、もう30分もかかっている。とは言え、私の楽しいアウトプット勉強法です。

原文

緑の枝を通す夕日を背に、暮れんとする晩春の蒼黒く巌頭を彩どる中に、楚然として織り出されたる女の顔は、――花下に余を驚かし、まぼろしに余を驚ろかし、振袖に余を驚かし、風呂場に余を驚かしたる女の顔である。

余が視線は、蒼白き女の顔の真中にぐさと釘付けにされたぎり動かない。女もしなやかなる体躯を伸せるだけ伸して、高い巌の上に一指も動かさずに立っている。この一刹那！

余は覚えず飛び上った。女はひらりと身をひねる。帯の間に椿の花の如く赤いものが、ちらついたと思ったら、すでに向うへ飛び下りた。夕日は樹梢を掠かすめて、幽に松の幹を染むる。熊笹はいよいよ青い。

また驚かされた。

私の翻訳
