中学英語で夏目漱石の『草枕』翻訳6

鳥飼玖美子が英語の学習法について書いた『本物の英語』をさっと読んでみた。仕事に必要なボキャブラリーは約8,000語だそうです。単語帳を作っても8,000語までは覚えられません。一番良い方法は多読だそうです。多読は辞書を引かずに読みます。それから対訳も必要だと言っています。この場合は辞書をフルに使って、例文など辞書が蓄積している情報を最大限に利用することだそうです。

『草枕』は私にはレベルが高すぎましたが、まさに私は和英、英和、英英辞書を行ったり来たりしています。Meredith Mckinneyの翻訳読んで、いつもなるほどと思っています。しかし近づくことなど出来ません。ただ楽しく自分の英語を目指しています。

湯のなかに浮いたまま、今度は土左衛門の賛を作って見る。
雨が降ったら濡ぬれるだろう。
霜しもが下おりたら冷つめたかろ。
土のしたでは暗かろう。
浮かば波の上、
沈まば波の底、
春の水なら苦はなかろ。
と口のうちで小声に誦しつつ漫然と浮いていると、どこかで弾ひく三味線の音が聞える。美術家だのにと云われると恐縮するが、実のところ、余がこの楽器における智識はすこぶる怪しいもので二が上がろうが、三が下がろうが、耳には余り影響を受けた試ためしがない。しかし、静かな春の夜に、雨さえ興を添える、山里の湯壺ゆつぼの中で、魂まで春の温泉でゆに浮かしながら、遠くの三味を無責任に聞くのははなはだ嬉しい。遠いから何を唄うたって、何を弾いているか無論わからない。そこに何だか趣がある。

私の翻訳

Floating in the bath, now I try to make a poem of a drowned person.
Maybe he’s wet in the rain.
Maybe he’s cold in a frost.
It is dark beneath the earth.
When floating , he’s on the waves.
When sinking, he’s  beneath the waves.
But there’s no pain in spring waters.

Whispering such a poem and floating in the bath aimlessly, I heard the sound of playing the samisen somewhere. I am ashamed to be called an artist. Actually my knowledge of instruments is doubtful. I have never been able to distinguish musical pitches, even if there is a second high or a third low off-pitch. But, in the quiet spring night, even the rain is zestful. Lying the whole of my soul in the spring hot-spring of a remote mountain village, I am very glad to hear the samisen play from a faraway place irresponsibly. As it is a sound of long away, of course I don’t know what is sung and played. This is why there is a tasteful something.
