教材は『井上靖全詩集』の「輸送船」
数年前、田舎の本棚にあった『井上靖全詩集』を抜き出して数篇読んだ。どんな詩だったか思い出せなかったが、人の本能を揺り動かす文章だった。もう一度読んで見たくなってAmazonのKindle版を購入した。

井上靖は日中戦争で招集されて出征している。「輸送船」は自らの体験を書いたのでしょうか。どの詩を取っても、私の実力で英語に置き換えるのは簡単ではない。辞書を行ったり来たりしてなんとか英語に置き換えました。勉強のための翻訳です。間違いは大目に見てください。
「輸送船」の原文
初冬の海峡におそい月が出た。刃のような三角波がくろい海面を埋め、くらげの息をひそめた眼が、時折、波間から月をうかがっていた。その中を燈火管制した輸送船は動くともなく動いて行った。満載した兵隊の一人をも零すまいとするかのように――。いったい、いつ、どこへ上陸するのか――誰一人知っている者はなかった。

内地の最後の灯だというどこかの燈台を、右舷はるかに見送ってしまうと、兵隊たちは申し合せたように船底に降りて、愕くほど深い睡りに落ちた。
潮流のそこここに無数の花が開き、祝祭にも似た異様な明るさが、この不思議な船に立てこめ始めたのは、確かにその頃からだった。
私の翻訳勉強
Over the straits in early winter, a late moon appeared, casting a dim light over the choppy waves that filled the surface of the black sea like a piercing blade. Jellyfish, holding their breath, peeked out from between the waves, their eyes fixed on the moon. A freighter, with its lights off, slowly made its way through the waters, carrying a full load of soldiers. It seemed as though not a single soldier would be lost, but where and when they would land was anyone’s guess.
As the soldiers looked out at the disappearing lighthouse, the last light of the mainland, they descended to the bottom of the ship and fell into a deep sleep.
Meanwhile, countless flowers bloomed in the tidal current, casting curious glows that filled the ship with an almost mystical atmosphere.
