コロナ禍の自粛生活で時間があったはずなのに、しばらく英語を書いていない。このままでは書けなくなってしまいそうです。井上靖の詩を教材にして翻訳で英語の勉強を再開しました。翻訳は始めるとはまってしまいます。

詩は難しい。完全に理解することはできません。それでも英語に置き換えるために何度も読み返していると、井上靖の記憶の一片がイメージできたような気がします。英語にするのは難しい。５時間もかかりました。勉強のための翻訳です。間違いは大目に見て下さい。

そこはどこか駅の近くらしく、時折、機関車の蒸気の音が間近に聞えていた。木柵が長く続き、電柱には暗い電燈が灯っていた。人足は跡絶えていたが、跡絶えているというより人々はこの路地のあることをもう長いこと忘れているのかも知れなかった。
そんな道ばたにしゃがんで、私はともすれば睡魔にたぐりよせられそうになっては、はっとして眼を見開いた。その度に夜空いちめんに鏤められた星が冷たく美しかった。坊や睡ってはだめ、大きな包を持っている母は日頃のやさしさに似ず邪慳にそんな言葉しか投げなかった。軈てどこからともなく父が現れた。坊や睡ってはだめ、母と同じことをいって私の頭をこづき、それから思い直したように抱き上げてまた地面へおろすと、父はさきに立って歩き出した。
――それから私たちは家に帰ったのか、汽車に乗ったのか、何をしたのか一切は記憶にない。ただ知っていることは、その夜が父母の生涯で、最も深い悲しみがふたりの心を埋めていた時の一つであったろうということである。年々歳々、なぜか父母のその夜の不幸を星の冷たい輝きで計量する私の確信は動かすべからざるものになってくる。

私の翻訳勉強

It may be situated near the train station. Every so often, the sound of steam from a locomotive nearby could be heard. The wooden fence extended far into the distance, and the utility pole was dimly lit by a bulb. There were no signs of human life, or rather, people may have forgotten about this alley for a long time.

While crouching on the side of the narrow street, I was repeatedly almost overtaken by drowsiness, but suddenly I opened my eyes wide. Upon each glance upwards, the stars etched in the night sky were cold and beautiful. My mother had a large bag and said mercilessly, “My boy, don’t sleep.” She was not her usual kind self. Soon, my father appeared out of nowhere. He said the same thing, “My boy, don’t sleep,” and lightly poked my head. He picked me up in his arms, as if he suddenly remembered something, put me back down on the ground, and started to walk ahead of us.

After that, did we return home or board a train? I cannot recall what we did. All I know is that night may have been one of the most difficult times for my parents. Their hearts were filled with the deepest sorrow. As the years passed, I became more convinced that I could, in some way, measure my parents’ unhappiness by comparing it to the gleaming, cold stars.
