大雨でした。窓の外の駐車場の排水溝がガボガボと苦しそうな音をたてている。こんな日は翻訳で英語の勉強をしましょう。
私の英語の実力では『草枕』はレベルが高過ぎた。『草枕』は今回で完として、また次の教材を探しましょう。大きな収穫は『草枕』をじっくり読めたことでしょうか。それで..と訊かれると、”文豪はすごい”としか言えません。時間をおいて、もう一度読んでみたい『草枕』です。
原文
いよいよ現実世界へ引きずり出された。汽車の見える所を現実世界と云う。汽車ほど二十世紀の文明を代表するものはあるまい。何百と云う人間を同じ箱へ詰めて轟と通る。情なさけ容赦ようしゃはない。詰め込まれた人間は皆同程度の速力で、同一の停車場へとまってそうして、同様に蒸汽の恩沢に浴さねばならぬ。人は汽車へ乗ると云う。余は積み込まれると云う。人は汽車で行くと云う。余は運搬されると云う。汽車ほど個性を軽蔑したものはない。
文明はあらゆる限りの手段をつくして、個性を発達せしめたる後、あらゆる限りの方法によってこの個性を踏み付けようとする。一人前ひとりまえ何坪何合かの地面を与えて、この地面のうちでは寝るとも起きるとも勝手にせよと云うのが現今の文明である。同時にこの何坪何合の周囲に鉄柵を設けて、これよりさきへは一歩も出てはならぬぞと威嚇のが現今の文明である。
私の翻訳
I’ve been pulled back to the real world at last. A place where we can see trains is called a real world. There may be nothing like a train representing the civilization of the 20th century.
Packing several hundred people in the same box, it passed along with a thundering noise. All of the packed people are transferred almost at the same speed, and stopped at the same stations and exposed to a benefit of smoky steam.
They say that they ride the train. But I say I am loaded into the train. They say that they go by train, but I say I am transferred by the train. There is nothing like a train looking down on human individuality.
Civilization develops human individuality using every possible means, but soon after tramples down human individuality by every possible means. It is the present civilization that it gives people a small some square meters land, and says that you are free to be sleeping or getting up within the land. But it is also an another present civilization to build an iron fence around the given land and threaten us if we go out of the fence.
